This exhibition spotlights ‘staffage’, which are the small human and animal figures featured in architectural drawings, which became increasingly popular during the 18th century. The exhibition aims to demonstrate the ability of staffage to bring an architect’s vision to life and how these features shift in style, demographics, work and culture over time.

Just as architects today use staffage to help prospective buyers imagine a life in and around new developments, these historic scenes were created to market new possibilities to audiences and draw attention to special aspects of the design.
